How to change your WHM Server Hostname?.

Updated: Jan 28

Important Points:
  • Choose a hostname that does not begin with WWW or a number, and does not end with a hyphen (-).

  • Use lowercase only.

  • As a hostname, do not use a possible service subdomain (for example, cpanel.yourdomin.com or whm.yourdomain.com).

  • Do not choose a hostname that will be used by a cPanel account on your server.

  • You must use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to identify the server (for example, subdomain.yourdomain.com or subdomain.yourdomain.co.in).

  • Choose a hostname which is 60 or less characters.

What is a hostname?

On the Internet, a hostname is a domain name assigned to a host computer. For example, serverone.incapio.org consists of a local hostname (server one) and the domain name incapio.org. That hostname is converted into an IP address through the local host's file or the Domain Name System (DNS) resolver.

The internet utilizes your hostname as a label to recognize your physical server. A hostname is a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) applied to access your server on the internet.

By default, the GoDaddy VPS server has an IP based hostname assigned to it. For example, ip-43-32-254-34.ip.secureserver.net. Those numbers indicate your VPS primary IP address. However, you can customize your hostname to improve your ability to send emails from your domain/server. In this guide, you can learn how to change the server hostname, using the Web Host Manager (WHM) and GoDaddy Interface.

Before configuring the hostname of the server, let's review what are the mandatory items required to configure the hostname?

Mandatory items

  • Domain(TLDs)

  • Fully Qualified Domain Name(FQDN)

  • An “A” record

Next, click on the Server Settings to configure the VPS hostname.

Beneath the server settings, ⇒ You’ll observe the hostname of the server like below.

ip-148-72-245-36.ip.secureserver.net/

Syntax:

your-vps-primary-ip.secureserver.net

By default, your hostname has been configured by the hypervisor during the installation of the server.

Next, On the right side of the hostname, click on change to type your preferred hostname like below.

Note: In my case, “serverone“ is the subdomain and the rest of the part is the main domain (incapio.org)

Next, click on the save. Once the modifications have been saved, we’ve to configure an “A“ record to the main domain to work hostname accurately.

Before going to add an “A” record copy your VPS primary IP Address.

How to Configure “A” DNS Record?

Next, Navigate to your products page, and choose the domain you prefer to configure an “A“ record and Click on Manage DNS.

Next, Beneath the domain DNS settings, you’ll notice ADD button, click on the ADD button.

Next, choose the “Type” of record to “A“ record, then type the subdomain name in the “host” section (In my case that would be server one), then paste or type your VPS primary IP address in the “Points to“ Section, and choose the “TTL“ to custom and enter 600 in the “Seconds“ field and save it.

Before you login into the WHM interface, check the DNS propagation to ensure that the “A“ record has been updated in all root zones.

Visit the DNS Propagation page and type your hostname and select the “A” from the drop-down and hit to check the results.

WHM / cPanel Login To log in to the WHM interface, we need the port number. The list of ports used by WHM/cPanel by default is listed below.

Service

Port Number

WHM - SSL (Secured Port)

2087

WHM - Non-Secure

2086

Next, open the browser then type the hostname, and append colon with 2087.

Syntax https://subdomain.yourdomain.com:2087 Example https://serverone.incapio.org:2087

If you notice a security warning in the browser, skip it and continue, and type username = root and password = admin password to login.

Conclusion:

Here are some more setup options that are recommended for cPanel & WHM users.
